I then get a notification of 2 updates: MonoDevelop and MonoTouch 5.4.0. After clicking Restart and Install Updates MonoDevelop closes, I get prompted for my password and the installer fails right away with "Error installing application". It appears to be occurring during the installation of MonoDevelop. I attached the logs.

Same problem here when trying to install MonoDevelop 3.0.5 and MonoTouch 6.0.6.

This should be fixed in 5.10
