Looks like that it treats <whatever> in  Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<whatever>" as a start of a tag.

Test case:

<%@ Page Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<List<List<List<List<<uint>>>>>" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.master"  %>
<asp:Content ID="MainContentContent" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server">	

Put your cursor after <span> and press enter.
