When the user clicks the Check for Updates Now button, a spinner should appear next to the button while MD checks for updates:
Then, if no updates are found, a pop-up dialog should appear that says:
Up To Date
You are using the latest released versions of MonoDevelop, MonoTouch, Mono for Android, and all other add-ins.

The list of items mentioned should reflect what the user actually has installed.
If updates are found, the normal "Updates are ready to install" dialog should appear (as happens now).
If updates are found when the user checks explicitly, they'll start downloading but won't be available to install immediately. So the dialog will have to say something like "Updates have been found and are now being downloaded". Or, we could have a dialog to show which updates are downloading and their progress.
Good point. Probably a dialog showing progress would be best, but we could start simple.
We also need that dialog to be shown when using the command available in the menu.
Fixed in master.
