Mono's C# compiler will not assume a return type (saying they are implicitly castable) between int and byte/int and sbyte, when one of the conditional parameters is a constant.
For example, Mono's C# compiler had a problem with this code of mine:
byte size = DataSize;
buffer.Add((byte)((size == 4 ? 3 : size) | (other stuff)));
This was fixed by changing to size == 4 ? (byte)3 : size.
The Microsoft compiler does not require this. Hence the code fails to compile on the Mono C# compiler but works on the Microsoft one.
This is csc bug.
