This appears to have been introduced in Xamarin.Forms 1.5.1. If you create two XAML pages, and have one inherit the other, you will get a compile error with the following:

Error	CS0234	The type or namespace name '{BasePage}' does not exist in the namespace 'Xamarin.Forms' (are you missing an assembly reference?)

Before 1.5.1 this appears to work, both in Xamarin Studio or Visual Studio.
