This relates to XF.Maps 2.1.0-pre2, X.GPS.Maps 26.0.0 and X.GPS.Base 27.0.0

Currently X.GPS.Maps 26 depends on a version of X.GPS.Base >= 26.0.0, however it displaying a MapView with XF.Maps 2.1.0-pre2 will fail if you upgrade X.GPS.Base to 27.0.0.

The exception you get is this:

java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: No virtual method zzrn()Lcom/google/android/gms/dynamic/LifecycleDelegate; in class Lcom/google/android/gms/maps/MapView$zzb; or its super classes (declaration of 'com.google.android.gms.maps.MapView$zzb' appears in /data/app/XamarinPoC.Android-1/base.apk)

I had the same problem after installing Xamarin.Forms and Xamarin.Forms.Maps - yielding the same error.

I found this note on the Xamarin Forums: http://forums.xamarin.com/discussion/comment/167192/#Comment_167192
which suggests removing X.Forms.Maps, X.GPS.Maps, and X.GPS.Base, (removing those folders from the packages folders), and re-adding X.Forms.Maps to get version 26 of X.GPS.Maps and X.GPS.Base installed.

This solution works (no more error), but it's not clear from the original java.lang.NoSuchMethodError the source of the problem nor the solution.
