Description Chris Toshok 2012-02-23 12:05:04 UTC
I know this is the same UI that existed before, but it's always been bad.

here's a dump from IRC, since I'm pretty sure I was talking to the void.. :)

[08:26:59] <toshok> does generating a heapshot run the collector at all?

[08:34:16] <toshok> any reason why the profiler isn't under the Run menu?
[08:34:23] <toshok> strange to see it under Project
[08:35:22] <toshok> and all sorts of pretty terrible UI going on in the heapshot window
[08:35:33] <toshok> 1) not resizable unless you're showing the gtktable view
[08:36:04] <toshok> 2) why do i have to select the heapshot and then switch to the summary tab to get info about the heapshot? that should be in columns on the LHS
[08:36:18] <toshok> 3) by default all the columns except type aren't visible at all
[08:36:24] <toshok> 4) soooooo many <Unknown>s
[08:38:16] <toshok> 5) pretty often the window gets confused when i click/drag in the title bar and starts resizing the window instead of moving it. well, actually the window moves and then snaps back to the old location and resizes some

[08:40:27] <toshok> and finally: 6) the columns are way way way unhelpful. Root Mem? Root Refs? nobody cares about that. the UI reminds me of gtop. just because you have the info doesn't mean it should be displayed :)

[08:41:21] <toshok> oh wait, i have a 7) why is there a tooltip on the type column? it's already showing exactly the same info that the tooltip provides :)

[08:54:40] <toshok> oh oh, one more thing: 8) there should be a "Hide/Show framework classes" toggle
[08:54:58] <toshok> because I don't really care about this UTF8Decoder that is alive
[08:55:28] <toshok> or the 4 System.Text.RegularExpressions.MRUList.Node :)

4) is bug #2553
Comment 2 Rolf Bjarne Kvinge [MSFT] 2012-02-23 16:27:43 UTC
Taking a heapshot does cause a collection (it's actually how the heapshot is triggered in the first place).
Comment 3 Rolf Bjarne Kvinge [MSFT] 2012-02-23 16:30:18 UTC
And the only reason the menu entry is under Project instead of Run is because it was easier to do it that way (and nobody voiced a strong opinion either way).

HeapShot will be replaced with a better profiler (with a much better UI).
