Description Jon Douglas [MSFT] 2015-05-20 18:19:05 UTC

Given a custom SearchBarRenderer, if one adds an additional event handler, it seems to clear previous hooked up handlers.
Because of this, it seems that one would have to manually hook up this event handler in the custom renderer instead of handling it in shared code. Given the example:

Shared Code:

        CustomRenderer.CustomSearchBar mySearchBar = new CustomRenderer.CustomSearchBar();

        mySearchBar.SearchButtonPressed += mySearchBar_SearchButtonPressed;

        void mySearchBar_SearchButtonPressed(object sender, EventArgs e)
            MainPage.DisplayAlert("Pressed", "SearchButtonPressed", "Cancel");

Android Custom Renderer:

[assembly: ExportRenderer(typeof(CustomSearchBar), typeof(XamarinBugDemo.Droid.CustomRenderer.CustomSearchBarRenderer))]

namespace XamarinBugDemo.Droid.CustomRenderer
    public class CustomSearchBarRenderer : SearchBarRenderer
        protected override void OnElementChanged(ElementChangedEventArgs<SearchBar> e)

            if (e.OldElement == null)
                var native = (global::Android.Widget.SearchView)Control;

                native.QueryTextChange += native_QueryTextChange;

        void native_QueryTextChange(object sender, Android.Widget.SearchView.QueryTextChangeEventArgs e)
            if (e.NewText.Length < 4)

Expected Behavior:

Both event handlers should be registered and it should hit the native_QueryTextChange and shared mySearchBar_SearchButtonPressed methods

Actual Behavior:

Only the Native Event Handler is registered and thus only native_QueryTextChange is called

By subscribing to the event, the SearchView.IOnQueryTextListener that we have set is being overriden, hence why we no longer fire the event. Instead, create an implementation of SearchView.IOnQueryTextListener that accepts a SearchView.IOnQueryTextListener and passes through the method calls in addition to your own behavior. Pass the renderer itself as the SearchView.IOnQueryTextListener.
