VERIFIED FIXED

Description Nischal 2014-09-22 10:34:37 UTC
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open or create iOS application in XS.
2. Open storyboard file in Xcode Interface builder.
3. Observe that XIB opens.
4. Now change focus to Xamarin Studio(Go back to XS and click somewhere or open any file).
5. Try to switch to XIB.

Actual Result: XIB gets closed and used need to reopen it using Right click .storyboard file->Open with->XIB.

Expected Result: XIB should not close.

Making this bug public as it contains no private information and customer reported bugs are being closed as duplicates of this. They need to be able to track this issue until it's fixed.

This is actually by design. It was a bug that Xcode didn't always get closed before and it was the sole cause of the "Xamarin Studio isn't syncing my changes back from Xcode" bug.

Basically, what was happening was that:

1. XS would sync out to Xcode
2. the user would make changes
3. then switch back to XS
4. XS would sync back the changes from Xcode and fail to close Xcode
5. the user would switch back to Xcode and make changes
6. then switch back to XS again
7. XS would not sync back the changes because the sync context had completed the first time.

Possible alternative ways of implementing this:

1. Drop the whole magic of syncing out and back from Xcode thing, and just have users use menu items to sync out to Xcode and back.

2. Find a way to use file system monitoring.

Xamarin and Xcode sync'd just fine until a few days ago. Now its unbelievably annoying to use as I am constantly relaunching the Xode Interface Builder and having to resize it on my Mac each time it opens.

I have to believe Xamarin did this for the sole purpose of getting users to stop using Xcode and start using their own designer.

If this somehow fixes some issue for someone, how about making this functionality OPTIONAL in preferences so those of us that were running just fine before don't have to be hindered by the this change.
Comment 6 Ruben Macias 2014-09-23 12:35:07 UTC
I agree with the above comment XCode syncing worked just fine. I did this hundreds of times working on various projects switching back and forth between XS and XCode. Never had a syncing problem as long as I Saved in XCode, it always synced back to XS. Having XCode close every time XS gains focus is infuriating, frustrating, and is the wrong solution. If you want to keep that functionality, keep it, but give us the option to keep XS open to those who know what they are doing. This bug has greatly affected my productivity and probably raised my blood pressure to. Let's just get this fixed. Thanks!

+1
This "by design" solution actually results in poorer workflow. It spends a lot of time on opening and indexing files. Please, make it like it was before.

Isn't normal to have by design a functionality like this to close Xcode anytime that you return in xamarin even you don't change anything in your storyboard.
I had manage to make out 3 project with xamarin and Xcode never had problem for syncing when Xcode was opened and keeps open. it runs smoothly.

Now i need to open anytime the Xcode and this is something that affects the productivity.
Please change it. Is very important feature to keep Xcode open and keep working like before.

I have checked this issue and this issue is working fine now i.e. xcode is not quieting while syncing with XS as shown in screencast : http://screencast.com/t/KzBgSBfcnIOu

To verify this issue I have also checked steps mention in comment 4, and its working fine

Hence closing this issue.
