Description Kevin Mullins 2014-09-12 09:33:12 UTC
Given the proliferation of iOS devices and varied screen sizes and resolutions (and the fact that Apple is really pushing the use of Unified Storyboards) Xamarin.iOS should have a set of preconfigured Unified Storyboard project and solution templates.

Each project template should include the following:

1) A Dynamic Launch Screen (LaunchScreen.xib) pre configured for Auto Layout and Size Classes.
2) A single MainStoryboard.storyboard file pre configured for Auto Layout and Size Classes.
3) An Info.plist file that is set for Devices Universal, Deployment Target 8.0 (or greater), and the main interface for both iPhone and iPad set to MainStoryboard.

Right now these setups can be created by hand but it's a bit of a PITA. For more information on Dynamic Launch Screens and Unified Storyboards, please see our http://developer.xamarin.com/guides/ios/platform_features/intro_to_unified_Storyboards/ this also includes some sample iOS 8 solutions that are preconfigured as above.

New Solution Dialog Box

The Unified Storyboard project should probably exist as another Category of UI under the Unified API section of the iOS templates (Unified UI) as an example and should have all of the same templates types as the Universal template collection.

This should be a different branch from Universal and not replace it... as there are still cases where a totally different UI (multiple storyboards) are required for each device.

New File Dialog

As part of this modification, we should add a Launch Screen iOS template (to match what Apple has done in Xcode) that adds a single LaunchScreen.xib file preconfigured to be a Dynamic Launch Screen (Auto Layout and Size Classes enabled).

Additional requests from the other bug report:

1. Also update the other unified templates, like for a new view controller.
2. Allow for either configuration. That is, don't remove the two-.xib templates entirely.

All the Unified iOS templates have been updated in the 5.9 release (the classic one will be slowly deprecated).

These new templates include storyboard using size classes (no more _iPhone and _iPad storyboards).

Note: the minimum target is now iOS 8.0 for all the new templates.

This release also includes some adjustments to the templates code. For instance the Open GL received a big update. We should now completely match Xcode.
