Description Brendan Zagaeski (Xamarin Team, assistant) 2014-09-02 17:59:39 UTC
The following error appears when attempting to build Classic API Mac apps using an Indie license on Xamarin.Mac 1.10:

> Error MM9030: Building Xamarin.Mac Legacy projects requires Business edition or higher.

## Problems

1. The error message uses the term "Legacy" rather than "Classic API".

2. Indie users who have a non-expired license are allowed to upgrade Xamarin.Mac to the latest versions. Upgrading to the current beta version (soon to be stable) will break the build for all of these users' existing apps.

## Steps to reproduce

1. Create a new "C# -> Mac -> Classic API -> Xamarin.Mac Project".

2. When the activation dialog appears, select "Continue using Indie Edition".

3. Repeat step 2 once more.

4. Attempt to build the app.

5. Again select "Continue using Indie Edition" when the activation dialog appears.

## Result

The build fails:

> Error MM9030: Building Xamarin.Mac Legacy projects requires Business edition or higher.

## Partial workarounds

### Option 1: convert Classic API projects to the Unified API

Caution: the Unified API includes several breaking changes. Depending on the complexity of the project, step 3 might require quite a bit of work.

1. Select "Project -> Migrate to Xamarin.Mac Unified API".

2. Click "Migrate to Unified API Preview".

3. Update the project to match the new API. For starters, replace all occurrences of the "MonoMac." namespace prefix with "". So for example, "MonoMac.Foundation" becomes "Foundation".

4. Ensure you are running Xamarin Studio 5.3 (build 427) or _earlier_ (to avoid bug 22481).

5. Build and run the app.

### Option 2: downgrade to Xamarin.Mac 1.8 + Xamarin Studio

If you downgrade to Xamarin.Mac 1.8 + Xamarin Studio, you will be able to continue building Classic API apps as normal.

Note that Xamarin.Mac 1.8 Indie is not currently compatible with Xamarin Studio 5.3. If you attempt to build a Classic API app with that combination, you will see a different error:

> Error: The Unknown Edition of Xamarin.Mac does not support building
> outside of Xamarin Studio. Please go to https://store.xamarin.com to
> upgrade to the Business Edition.

To resolve that error, be sure to downgrade Xamarin Studio to version

a) I've fixed the error to note the correct term, "Classic"
b) This should be fixed in the latest beta (alpha is lagging behind). Please reopen if you have problems after upgrading to beta. Alpha (1.11) will be updated next week most likely.

I have checked this issue with latest XM and observe that now we are not getting any trigger with INDIE license on running Classic Xam.Mac application.

Hence, closing this issue.
