Most text editors have some kind of status bar field that shows the current cursor line and column numbers. All worthy programmers' editors do. When MonoDevelop/Xamarin Studio have "Show Line Numbers" turned off, it has no further way of indicating to the user this important information. Users who prefer not to always have the line numbers showing, taking up visual space, must then rely heavily on "Go To Line Number" feature (then Ctrl+'|' find cursor probably) to get to line numbers that are shown from some other program (say, Unity shader compiler or whatever). I consider this lack of a standard feature to be a bug, especially since there's a row of mostly empty space down there for pads that could be used. I'd submit this as a feature request but don't know how yet.
It's a design issue.
