It appears that the files added are those which are not strictly related to XCode but are part of XCode project (e.g. graphics, .strings files):

$ git status
# On branch foo
# Changes to be committed:
# (use "git reset HEAD <file>..." to unstage)
#	new file:   FooBar/obj/Xcode/0/MainWindow.strings
#	new file:   FooBar/obj/Xcode/0/Resources/graphics/Complete.png

It would be helpful if MD just ignored the obj/ directory entirely

This is possibly an xcode integration issue. Xcode has git support and it could easily be adding the files to the git repo automagically. Maybe there's a project setting we can set to disable VCS integration for our autogenerated projects.

I don't think anyone has seen this in years
