Not sure if this is an Xcode problem or the Xamarin interface to Xcode - might even be a xam studio issue

If you create a simple design in Xcode and drag the widget to the connector, it's fine. But if you delete the connected reference on the connector and then drag the same widget to the connector but use a different name, the generated xib file contains both connections which causes the app to die as the widget expected doesn't physically exist.

The connection type doesn't seem to make a difference

It's Xcode. Xamarin Studio doesn't modify xib files.
