The iOS launch image picker currently allows picking the sizes documented by Apple: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/userexperience/conceptual/mobilehig/IconsImages/IconsImages.html

These take into account the area taken by the statusbar in each orientation.

However, if the app uses the UIStatusBarHidden plist key to hide the status bar at launch, the images may be the full screen size.
