If my DNS isn't set right where the hostname of the mac plus the domain suffix resolves to the mac, the keepalives don't work and the visual studio ios stuff severs the connection every minute or so. I can't even get a build completed.
Along with the issue of having to kill the mtbserver to reconnect, this is really annoying.
I discovered it being tied to DNS after using a wireshark trace to see a bunch of DNS names in UDP traffic.
I added my mac to my local DNS server and I don't have any problems anymore. I don't think any additional network configuration should be necessary if the initial connection is established.
Visual Studio uses Apple Bonjour to obtain the IP address of the build server - it does not use DNS. DNS queries are as it seems used by the mdns daemon on the Mac machine (part of OSX) to obtain that IP. I'm inclined to say that there's not much we can do about this since we cannot modify the DNS configuration or Mac hostname+suffix but I will let Jose weigh in on that, as I might be wrong.
As Marek is pointing out, there is not much we can do. However, I would suggest to set your Mac build host IP manually (you may reach it by clicking "Configure Host manually" button of the Connection Dialog (Tools --> options --> Xamarin --> iOS --> Configre). This is not the recommended mode but at least it's perfectly useful and valid one. Let us know,,, Thanks.
Marking it as resolved.
