Description Simon Jefferies 2013-05-08 02:29:49 UTC
Right clicking on a variable and attempting to bring up the context menu causes the IDE to lock up and become unresponsive.

Open a solution, trigger a compiler error and then right click on a variable to investigate line.

The context menu does not show and the IDE locks up.

can you give me a KILL -QUIT output ?
Comment 2 Mike Krüger 2013-05-10 03:42:53 UTC
Oh you're using windows - there is no kill command there :/
Comment 3 Ben 2013-05-11 04:07:12 UTC
Just for a little more information - this doesn't cause a complete crash, it just hangs the UI for a long while. I let it sit while I searched for this bug, and after finding this I went back at the UI was responsive again. After the first long hang, I can right click variables and it behaves with normal speed.

more info:
open any project (such as the database demo),
move the mouse over any identifier or C# keyword in a cs file
when no info-bubble comes up, right-click on the word.
Nothing seems to happen. So,then
   left-click anywhere on the editor
and you get the neon donut for around 5 minutes.

Maybe it's because the type database is updating after installing the new version of XS?
Comment 6 eduard.qualls 2013-05-13 18:09:03 UTC
That is possible. XS's working set on this project is over 200 Mb, and today the IDE is really fast at putting up the right-click context menu (including those slight changes in the "Refactor" option determined by type), or putting up the type-info bubble. The IDE is now fast enough that I can't reproduce the problem.
Comment 7 Mike Krüger 2013-05-14 00:57:07 UTC
type database creation is only a few seconds - when removing it it's faster to make the type database than to load a big project (monodevelop) - 5 minutes is unlikely.

Here are errors posted to the log file while this was happening, with several "The file type is not registered with this application" sections omitted:
(The "5-minute timeout" may have come from the last error in the list.)

I am also consistently encountering this bug. When I've created a new project and then try to right-click on a class or variable name the IDE freezes without displaying the context menu. The IDE stays frozen a long time (more than several minutes.) I have to kill Xamarin Studio with the Task Manager. After I restart Xamarin Studio, I don't have a problem again until I create a new project.

The IDE also freezes sometimes when I right-click on a the References folder and select "Edit references...". This may be the same bug.

Unfortunately we have not yet been able to reproduce this.
Comment 14 Mike Krüger 2013-07-22 01:01:00 UTC
I use right clicking every day - I don't encounter this issue ... when I do I could diagnose the problem easily (I can print the thread state of the application)

Maybe a side effect of the machine, operating system or other running program.
Comment 15 Mike Krüger 2013-09-12 06:20:39 UTC
We were not able to reproduce that - but it doesn't get reported for newer versions.

-> re open if it happens again with newer versions
