Do we need to build after template creation? I think not..
Comment 2 Jonathan Pryor 2014-04-21 10:52:28 UTC
Is this a problem?

Normal Xamarin Studio behavior is to call the UpdateAndroidResources target whenever the Resources directory is changed so that Resources.Designer.cs is updated to correspond to the changes in the Resources directory, allowing Code Completion to accurately show what resources are available.

(Visual Studio does not currently do this, meaning code completion on the Resources type won't work until a Build has been performed.)

Arguably this isn't necessary when the project is first created, as the template Resource.Designer.cs should accurately match the default template, but that said...is it important to avoid calling the UpdateAndroidResources target on initial project creation?

There are two minor problems really. The first is that although the target is called "behind the scenes", it's taking over the build pad, which is confusing. The second is that the target is being called for new projects, even though they should be up to date already.

I'm not sure we can get rid of the initial resgen, I tried it and the designer broke because none of the strings were registered properly so I've left that as is.

I have changed the behaviour so that it does not use the build output anymore, if there are any errors from running UpdateAndroidResources they are surfaced in another pad which is hidden / removed in the "normal" or successful state - it only appears when there are errors resulting from running UpdateAndroidResources.

I have checked this issue with C7 latest build and observed that now this issue works fine. It is not creating Build Output automatically on creating an android project from any template.
